The large man had a name, given to him by his parents. He was Donald Russell, Donnie to his mother, D to his friends, and Desolator to his sparring partners at the local boxing gym. He stopped boxing once Francis upgraded him.

Donald went rogue—three months ago.

“I thought Francis was in charge.”

Francis was Donald’s cousin, twice removed, by marriage, not by blood. Donald had always been nice Francis. The old woman confirmed that. She knew all the times Donald stood up for Francis, all the times he went easy on the young pudgy boy when they played football or basketball.

“She’s more Francis than the man you follow,” Donald said. “He knew he had to sell out. He needed more money than some scams could provide. And Francis wasn’t stupid enough for the quick cash or a robbery. He knew the right people would provide him with everything he needed. So he uploaded his real self into Mrs. Hammond here. The new Francis was smarter. He realized some of his mistakes. Sent two guys to clean up his old apartment, but someone was there. We found those two dudes dead. Washed out of a drain pipe.”

Derek and Jesse—the two upgrades that I helped Rickey kill.

“All his original technology disappeared. It fell into the wrong hands. But Francis couldn’t let his new employers know that. He worked away, only upgrading physical traits. It was all for the military. As if that wasn’t obvious enough. But as I said, Francis was in Mrs. Hammond. He wasn’t the guy who showed me the things they were doing. He was turning people into weapons—boogey men. They didn’t just fight the bad guys. They were used to torment and orchestrate political coups.”

“Charade.”

“Yes.”

Rickey was pleased that his initial belief about Charade’s intentions held true. He liked hearing what Donald told him.

“I knew the day would come when your Francis would tell somebody to come kill the real Francis. And I can’t let nobody do that. I want my cousin back.”

Mrs. Hammond wept. “I thought… I was ready… Francis would not want to have done the things you said. He would be so mad at himself. I know him.”

“I know him too,” Rickey said. “He was the best guy I ever met. The real Francis would not have done what you said.”

“So you see, I can’t let you kill her.”

“I’m not sure I could. Francis would know that.”

“Not if he made himself for that much. It was a sign to me if he tried to kill her then he had gone too far towards his ideal of perfecting the human race. He was just supposed to tip the scales. Give people something other than scratching by.”

Alice, Rickey said to me, what do I do?

I couldn’t answer him. I wasn’t sure. I was having a hard time finding any information on Donald Russell; given the details he provided them with. I felt like telling Rickey to run again. But that hadn’t worked the last time.

“I don’t remember you ever being friends with Francis.
